Only a few weeks after Bernadeth opened the old photo album, the house felt different. The questions she asked that afternoon stayed with Papa Franz. I could see it in the way he looked at Mommy Brenda longer, in the way he became quieter at night, and in the way he started fixing small things around the house as if preparing for something permanent.
One evening, after Bernadeth had fallen asleep, Papa Franz asked Mommy Brenda to sit with him in the living room. I was in the hallway, not meaning to listen, but I heard enough.
Franz:
Brenda… for a long time I stayed because I loved you and Josh. Then Bernadeth came, and this house became more than a place to heal. It became a home. I don’t want to only stay. I want to make it official. Papa Franz said, his voice steady but full of emotion.
There was a pause. Then Mommy Brenda’s soft answer came, almost breaking.
Franz… are you sure? she asked.
Yes. I want us to be a family not only in our hearts, but in name as well. he replied.
When I stepped back into my room, I felt something settle in my chest. Bernadeth’s simple curiosity about the photos had opened a door that Papa Franz was finally ready to walk through.
The wedding was simple and quick. There was no long engagement, no big preparation. Just a quiet decision that had been waiting for the right moment. A few weeks later, we were standing in a small garden filled with white flowers and soft light. I was still thirteen. Bernadeth was only five, wearing a small white dress and holding a tiny basket of petals like it was the most important job in the world.

Kuya Josh, magiging complete family na tayo? she whispered while holding my hand.
Oo, Bebe. Complete na. I answered, smiling.
Mommy Brenda walked down the short path in a simple ivory dress. Papa Franz waited at the end, looking calm and sure. When they stood together and said their vows, Bernadeth leaned against me, watching with wide eyes. During the ceremony, the officiant asked me to come forward. Papa Franz turned to me with a warm smile. Papa Franz looked at me and spoke words I had waited years to hear.
Josh, today I am not only marrying your Mommy Brenda, I want to make it official. I want to adopt you as my son. Will you accept me as your father, not just in my heart, but in name also? Papa Franz asked, his voice steady but full of emotion.

Yes, Papa. Matagal na kitang tatay ko eh. I replied, my voice cracking.
The guests clapped as Papa Franz hugged me tightly. From that day on, I officially became Josh Esguerra Molina. Bernadeth jumped with joy beside us.
Kuya, happy family na tayo! she said, her small face beaming.
That night, as I lay in bed, I thought about the old album Bernadeth had opened. The photos of goodbye, of waiting, of graves, and of airport farewells had somehow led us here. What started as a child’s curiosity became the quiet push that made Papa Franz finally speak the promise he had been carrying for years. → story continues in Chapter 5 Live on August 21!
Some decisions take years to become clear. But sometimes it only takes one afternoon, one album, and one small voice asking simple questions for the heart to finally know it is ready. That day, our family stopped being something we only felt. It became something we could finally name. Some promises take years to be fulfilled. But when they finally arrive, they make every difficult journey worth it. Today, I became not just Papa Franz’s son in my heart, but in name as well. And for the first time, our family felt whole.
