Bernadeth sat across from Josh, Bible already open. She looked at him with quiet energy. Sige Kuya Josh, saan tayo mag-uumpisa? Bernadeth asked. Josh turned a few pages and stopped. Buksan mo sa Matthew 13:1-9, tapos 18-23. Doon 'yung unang parable — The Sower. Josh replied.

A farmer scattering seeds across different kinds of soil at sunrise

Bernadeth found the passage and began reading aloud: “That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.’” She continued with Jesus’ own explanation to the disciples, then closed the Bible slowly. Ang simple lang noong story. Farmer, seeds, four kinds of soil. Pero bakit parang ang bigat pagkatapos basahin? Bernadeth said. Josh looked at the open page. Walang ugat. Josh said. Yung thorns naman… 'yun 'yung pinaka-relatable siguro ngayon. Dami nating iniisip. Work, pera, future, notifications… lahat sumasakal. Bernadeth added. Pero may good soil pa rin. 'Yung taong nakikinig talaga, naiintindihan, at pinapayagan 'yung salita na magbunga. Hindi perfect. Pero real. Josh replied. Josh paused for a moment, then continued. Josh said. Parang 'yung Sower talaga. Tinatapon niya 'yung binhi. Bernadeth replied quietly.

Why It Matters in 2026

In 2026, it is very easy to lose focus. Notifications, comparison, and constant pressure often act like thorns. This parable does not exist to guilt us. It simply reminds us that it is still possible to become good soil. Even in unexpected places — malls, restaurants, weddings, or baccalaureate masses — the seed continues to be sown.

Bernadeth closed the Bible and looked at Josh. O Kuya, saan 'yung susunod? she asked. Buksan mo sa Matthew 13:24-30 at 36-43. Doon 'yung Parable of the Weeds. Josh replied. → We continue with The Parable of the Weeds on October 3, at 11:23 AM.
