After the break, Josh and Bernadeth returned to the table looking refreshed. New clothes. Clearer eyes. The November light felt different. Ready na ba tayo ulit, Kuya? Bernadeth asked, smiling. Josh opened the Bible to a new section. Matthew 18:21-35. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. Josh answered.

Bernadeth read the long parable carefully. A servant owed the king an enormous amount, ten thousand bags of gold. When he begged for mercy, the king forgave him completely. But that same servant later found a fellow servant who owed him only a hundred silver coins. Instead of showing the same mercy, he grabbed him and threw him into prison. Ang laki ng contrast. Napakalaki 'yung pinatawad sa kanya, tapos 'yung maliit na utang hindi niya mapatawad. Bernadeth observed. Oo. At doon siya napahiya. 'Yung king galit na galit nang malaman. Josh continued. They sat with the weight of the story. Parang ang message, 'yung mercy na natanggap mo, dapat dumaloy din sa iba. Bernadeth added quietly. Exactly. Kapag pinatawad ka nang sobra-sobra, hindi pwedeng maging mahigpit ka sa iba. Josh noted.

Line-by-Line Meaning & Analysis

Matthew 18:21-35 – The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant Peter asked how many times he should forgive. Jesus answered with this parable. A king settled accounts with his servants. One servant owed ten thousand bags of gold, an impossible debt. When he fell on his knees and begged, the king took pity and canceled the debt. That same servant later found a fellow servant who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him, began to choke him, and refused to show mercy. He threw him into prison. When the king heard what happened, he called the first servant back and said, “Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?” In anger, the king handed him over to the jailers. Jesus ended: “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” Key Points: - The debt forgiven by the king is impossibly large. - The debt the servant refused to forgive is comparatively small. - Mercy received creates an obligation to extend mercy. - Unforgiveness after receiving great forgiveness is exposed as hypocrisy.

Why It Matters in 2026

In a culture that keeps careful score of offenses, this parable still cuts deep. Many people carry the memory of how much they have been forgiven, by God, by family, by friends, yet struggle to release smaller debts owed to them. The story does not excuse wrong. It simply asks a hard question: If you have been forgiven so much, how can you withhold forgiveness from others?
